Dímelo: Dialogue Series | “Where are all of the Latinos?”: Complexities and Histories of Latinidad at NU, Chicago, and Beyond | MSA x CAPS
Oct 1st, 2024 | 3:30 - 5 PM | Multicultural Center Room 205

In 2007, the cover of ¡Ahora!, a NU student-run Latine/x magazine read “Where are all of the Latinos?” This dialogue topic pulls from that title and a question that still echoes across campus today. This conversation will explore questions of race, ethnicity, and latinidad at NU specifically and in connection to Chicago at large, along with how that looks relationally to various locations of diasporas. Dialogue will be informed by placed-based histories and memories–recuerdos.

Dímelo is a dialogue series grounded in intersectional topics and saberes (knowledge). Dímelo is a signature program series that takes place all-year long. You can learn more about about the series and previous topics by visiting the programming page.

Algo Dulcecito | MSA

Stop by the Multicultural Center and/or the Black House a little something sweet!

Dímelo: Dialogue Series | Undocumented/Art: Inheritances and Borders | MSA x CAPS
Oct 15, 2024 | 3:30 - 5 PM | Multicultural Center Room 205

Guided by different undocumented artists and artworks across oceans, this conversation will be focused on borders, inheritances, colonialism, and im/migration. What are borders and how have they shaped what different communities have inherited? Thinking materially and expansively, this conversation will include a crafting activity as part of discussion and reflection.

Topics to keep an eye out for in the following weeks include "Para la familia: Moving away, Home, and Familismo," and "Spanglish: Language, Dialects, Identity, and 'no sabo kids'."

Displays and Installations:
Latine Multiverse @ The MCC

Starting October 31st, MSA will install a community altar for Día de los Muertos. Once installed, students, student organizations, and NU community members are invited to add a remembrance card, photos, and/or momentos to the ofrenda to honor their departed loved ones.

There will also be materials that acknowledge the Indigenous and Afro-Indigenous roots of Día de los Muertos, along with the significance of some of the practices and symbols of Día de los Muertos and honoring the dead across various Latin American and Caribbean geographies.

If you would like to share an event for LHM, you can add your event to the campus-wide calendar through the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (OIDI) by submitting through their process here.

OIDI’s website will be the central hub to view University programming for Heritage Months/identity-based recognitions for faculty, staff, and students. This will allow our NU community to view all the events and programming happening across the University for a specific month (or day) in a central location – along with Planit Purple.
