High Heat Warning

August 2024

Summary

The National Weather Service is forecasting high temperatures on campus this week, which increases the risk of heat stress-related illnesses (e.g., heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke). Those working outdoors should take extra precautions to ensure their safety in such conditions.

Safety tips

  • Monitor local forecasts and, if possible, schedule outdoor work during cooler parts of the day, such as the morning.
  • Take frequent breaks in shaded, cool areas.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
  • When possible, wear light or loose-fitting clothing to promote air circulation on the skin.

Responding to heat stress

If you or one of your coworkers is experiencing signs or symptoms of heat stress (e.g., excessive sweating, dizziness, weakness, or hot/dry skin) notify your supervisor immediately and do the following:

  • Move to a well-ventilated, cool, and shaded area.
  • Drink cool water.
  • Remove or loosen outer clothing, if possible.
  • Cool down using ice packs or cool compresses on the head, neck, armpits, or groin.
  • If the condition is serious (e.g., fainting, seizures, confusion), call 911 immediately!
