Career Resources for Veterans
As you make your way from military service to Â鶹´«Ã½ to post-degree employment, we are here to coach and support you. Whether that is exploring career options to pursing an internship or job, we look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.
Finding Jobs and Internships
As you use Handshake [hyperlink] to search for opportunities, both general and veteran-related, keep these tips in mind:
- In “jobs”, use the keyword “veteran” to find employers who have a hiring policy inclusive of veterans and those actively seeking to hire veterans.
- In “employers”, again using the “veteran” keyword one can find veteran-associated employers, including verified Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Businesses (SDVOSB).
- The “students” link will allow you to network with other veterans from Â鶹´«Ã½ and other schools. Search by past employers (ex. U.S. Army) or student organizations. A great way to make connections.
A few veteran-specific job search resources are below. These represent a starting place and we suggest that you consult with your career adviser to identify additional industry-specific resources that will support your unique search.
- : Contains jobs with veteran friendly employers and is searchable for MOC codes. State-specific job resources are also available using a linked U.S. map.
- : Provides veterans with resources to explore career options by keyword and skills. There is also an interest assessment to assist those who are open to many options.
- : A coalition of 200 employers who support opportunities for veterans. This site also contains links to branch transition resources and additional websites for job postings.
- : This site provides job and internship opportunities in the federal government. Discusses veteran’s preference and provides a link to the fedshirevets.gov website.
- : A veteran-specific job board that also includes resources for salaries and to research employers.
Writing a Civilian Resume
As you reflect on your “story”, your military experiences and roles might not map to your industry of choice at face value. You may need to translate some of your military experiences in a way that helps employers to understand the skills you used and possess.
Brainstorm your career goals as well as research your industries and jobs of choice. Match your military skills and experience to civilian occupations. Which of your skills align with your career/industry interests? Are there any additional transferable skills that can be applied?

- Â鶹´«Ã½ Externship Program (NEXT) is a one-day shadowing program offering current Â鶹´«Ã½ students the opportunity to accompany alumni on the job to learn more about a variety of professional fields.
